Wesleyan golfers win historic championship

Messenger-Inquirer

The Kentucky Wesleyan College women's golf team won a tournament for the first time in program history on Tuesday, capturing the Jackson Purchase Intercollegiate event at Siloh's Country Club in Paducah.

"This is tremendously exciting for our program," KWC coach Brent Mathew said. "Two-and-a-half years ago we were shooting team scores over 800 (for two rounds) and losing matches by 200 strokes.

"This accomplishment is a tribute to our players, who have put forth many hours of hard work in practice to become better golfers."

Wesleyan finished with a 36-hole total of 712, defeating runner-up and host Bethel (Tenn.) by four strokes. Brescia finished third (733), followed by Martin Methodist (770).

KWC was led by two all-tournament performers, Courtney Wallace (82-87--169), who was second overall, and Rachel Ross (86-85--171), who tied for third. Also scoring for the Panthers were Lauren Jill Tatum (94-92--186) and Lexie Estes (91-95--186).

Two Lady Bearcats earned all-tournament honors: Bretnea Turner (171), who tied for third overall, and Gabrielle Murphy (174).

KWC returns to the links on Monday for the opening round of the 36-hole Bubba Gump Tournament in Hattiesburg, Miss.
