Shelbi Tyra, a second-team Lexington Herald-Leader All-State selection at Grayson County in Leitchfield, signed a national letter-of-intent with Kentucky Wesleyan College to continue her education and basketball career with the Panthers, according to head coach
Nicole Nieman.
Tyra, a 5-foot-9 guard/forward, averaged 19.1 points, 7.4 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.2 steals per game during her senior year where she led the Cougars to the 12th district championship and to the Third Region semifinals with a 23-9 record for head coach Brad Johnson. She also was named third-team Courier-Journal All-State in 2010.
“Shelbi is a very versatile player," said Nieman. "She has a quick pull-up jumper, can play with her back to the basket, and can handle the ball. These abilities will allow Shelbi to play inside and out and will make her a great asset to our team in the upcoming years.”
The 2010 Kentucky Association of Basketball Coaches Third Region Player of the Year shot 52.4 percent from the field, 33.2 percent from the three-point arc and 75.3 percent from the free throw line. She finished her career with 2,040 points.
As a junior, she received honorable mention All-State recognition by the Courier-Journal in leading Grayson County to a 26-5 record by averaging a team-best 19.5 points and 10 rebounds per game. She was tabbed to the 2009 Kentucky Junior All-State Team.
Her other career accolades include two-time selection to the Messenger-Inquirer All-Region team, three-time all-district and all-region selection, named to the KABC East-West All-Star squad, received an invitation to try-out for the Kentucky-Indiana All-Star squad.
She is the daughter of Terry and Shelia of Leitchfield and granddaughter of former University of Louisville basketball legend Charles Tyra. She plans to major in special education.
