Bianca Barton, a 5-7 guard from Shawnee State University in Portsmouth, Ohio will transfer to Kentucky Wesleyan College and play basketball for the Panthers, according to co-head coaches
Caleb Nieman and
Nicole Nieman.
The native of Pontiac, Mich., missed her sophomore season due to an injury. She will have three years of eligibility at KWC.
As a freshman, Barton led the Bears in assists at 4.4 per game while averaging 6.3 points, 2.3 rebounds and 23.6 minutes in starting 31 of 32 games played. She tied for second in steals with 48 and 14 blocks in 2009.
For her performance, she earned All-American Mideast Conference Freshman Team honors and helped SSU to the AMC Championship and a 16th finish at the NAIA Championship with a 31-1 mark.
“Bianca has a real talent for getting people the ball in the right spots," said the Nieman's. "Her overall quickness is going to give us the ability to put pressure on teams, both offensively and defensively. She comes in with a solid year of experience from a national runner-up NAIA program.”
At Birmingham Roeper High School, Barton was a first team Detroit Free Press Class D All-State performer in 2008. She averaged 15.2 points, 6.0 assists, 4.2 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 4.1 steals as senior. The team won 74 games in her career.
Barton captured the 2008 All-Michigan Independent Athletic Conference Most Valuable Player Award and first team Eccentric All-Area recognition. She also was named fist team All-MIAC four times and scored over 1,000 career points.
