Owensboro, Ky. – The Kentucky Wesleyan baseball team scored 28 runs across two wins over Thomas More on Saturday afternoon at Panther Park.
The Panthers had their ace, Evan Oakley, on the mound for Game 1 and he continued his incredible season with a line of 7.0 IP, 1 ER, and 10 SO.
The Wesleyan offense got to work quickly in support of Oakley. Liam Hutson singled to lead off the first and Jase Mizell followed with an RBI double, giving the home team a 1-0 lead after the first.
The Panthers added three more in the second frame. Logan Molnar singled up the middle and Hutson next delivered with a two-run home run over the right field wall. Then, Mizell and Dysholm both singled and Reece Davis knocked an RBI single to stretch the advantage to 4-0.
After the Saints scored their only run in the third inning, the Panthers offense got back to work in the fourth. Molnar worked a walk and Hutson tallied an RBI double to add a fifth run to the Wesleyan tally.
Later, in the bottom half of the fifth, the Panthers broke the game wide open. Starting with a Cade Gudalis walk and an Elijah Stockton double, the home team had their best inning of the season with 10 total runs scored to build their lead to an astonishing 15-1.
Oakley closed out the win with more zeros in the final frame, giving the Panthers a 1-0 series lead to begin the four-game set.
In Game 2, the Saints got on the board first with a home run in the first inning. From there, it was all Panthers behind starting pitcher Isaac Rose (5.2 IP, 3 ER, 7 SO).
In the bottom of the second, Colson Perry reached on an error, Gudalis singled, and Stockton singled as well to load the bases. Perry then scored on a wild pitch before Molnar doubled to score two more runs for Wesleyan, giving the home team an early 3-1 lead.
In the Panthers' next turn at the plate, Reece Davis led off with a single, Tate VanHooser followed with his own single, and Perry again reached on an error that allowed both Davis and VanHooser to score.
Wesleyan just couldn't stop scoring, adding three more runs in the fourth and five more in the fifth to cap off their 28-run day and the 13-3 triumph.
The two teams have two games left in the series, set to play both tomorrow beginning at 12:00 PM at Foster Field.
